PP Geogrids provided
Geogrids are extremely suitable for improving the load-bearing capacity and stabilization of road and rail structures.
The use of geogrids in the foundation will generally lead to better compaction of the foundation material due to the hook resistance of the granules in the openings of the geogrid, the so-called interlocking effect.
This creates a so-called horizontal reinforcement that ensures:
- better distribution of forces due to the slab action of the foundation.
- increase in load-bearing capacity, by reducing the horizontal shear stress on the subsurface, which in turn leads to a limitation of the lateral deformation of the foundation material
This can also result in significant savings on foundation thickness.
According to the International Geotextile Organization (IGS), the requirements for a geogrid to generate these mechanisms include:
- high strength and stiffness
- high friction with the foundation material (interlocking)
- water-permeable
Geopex PP provided geogrids are used in:
- reinforcement of embankments on poorly load-bearing subsoils
- reinforcement in road constructions
- soil reinforcement of steep slopes (uniaxial)
- railways
The method of provision determines the final application.
Uniaxial geogrids have the greatest strength in one direction and are therefore mostly used as anchorage in vertical reinforced ground structures.
Biaxial geogrids have equal strengths in both directions, perpendicular to each other. This makes them extremely suitable for use in structures where the forces often come from the same direction, as roads and railways.
Uniaxial geogrids
Uniaxial geogrids have the greatest strength in one direction and are therefore used, among other things, as anchorage in vertical reinforced ground structures.
Biaxial geogrids
These geogrids with equal tensile strengths in both directions are very suitable for use in road constructions on soil with poor load-bearing capacity. Provides a higher load-bearing capacity due to the interlocking of the grains between the openings of the geogrid.
There is also a version of the bi-axial geogrids that is provided with a non-woven separating fleece, for use on very poor subsurfaces, to prevent mixing with the foundation material.
Installation
Geopex geogrids can be used with the most common fill materials. To ensure optimum interaction between the grid and the ballast material, the ratio between the grid mesh size and the grain size will correspond to:
Minimum cross-section of meshes
———————————————————— = between 2 and 3.5
D50, average grain size
The geogrids can be cut to length in advance with a sharp knife or scissors.
Specifications and design parameters such as reduction factors are available on request.
